Andy Till will take the reins of his first collegiate team for the upcoming 2009 season, becoming the Majors’ first full-time cross country coach in program history in addition to helping build a competitive track & field program from scratch.
At St. Andrew’s, Till developed one of the most dominant cross-country and track & field programs in the state, leading the Saints to 15 state championships, 48 individual state champions and four state record holders.
“It’s been great, but I think I’ve gone about as far as I can coaching at the high school level,” Till said. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of building a program that can compete among the best schools in the region.”
In a career spanning from 1997 through 2008, Till’s coaching success at St. Andrew’s is unparalleled. Under Andy’s guidance, his female cross country team won an unsurpassed 10-straight state championships. He also coached eight individual state champions in the discipline and record holders in the 3200 and 4000m state championship courses.
He coached the girls’ track team to five 2A state championships and five runner-up finishes. He has also coached state record holders in the 800 and 1600m events.
Till is the 1999 Mississippi Association of Coaches Cross Country Coach of the Year. He is also twice recognized as the National Federation of Coaches Association – Mississippi Coach of the Year (2002 and 2005). Additionally, Till is a Certified Level 1 Track & Field Coach.
No stranger to building successful programs, Till built the program at St. Andrews to more than 100 athletes and led efforts that saw a new, state-of-the-art track facility constructed on the campus.
A Jackson native and an all-state runner throughout high school at Jackson Prep, Till ran his first cross country meet at Woodland Hills in sixth grade – the first private school meet in the state of Mississippi. He then walked-on at Ole Miss before transferring to the University of Montana. While at Montana, Till spent his summers working as a ranger at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming where he stayed in shape by running in the mountains.
Till moved back home in 1995 to coach cross country, starting the program at East Rankin Academy and staying there two seasons, before taking the job at St. Andrew’s.
In all, Till has 14 years experience coaching cross country track & field. He will officially begin at Millsaps College on July 1, 2009.
