The Purple Pride Dance Team is a dynamic asset to school spirit at Millsaps College. The team dances at home football and basketball games. The team also makes appearances at pep rallies and occasional athletic and alumni events. The foundation of the dance team is to support the athletic programs by engaging team members and other students in active school spirit and increasing the Major Pride in and for our teams.

For more information on how to become involved with the dance team, email head coach Jordan Willett at jordanewillett@gmail.com or advisor Laura Rabalais at laura.rabalais@millsaps.edu or call (601)-974-1063.

Qualifications:
Current or accepted Millsaps students may try out for the team. Proof of medical insurance is required. Insurance must be maintained throughout the year. Applicants must be in good standing with the college with a sufficient fitness level to perform and practice.

Mandatory Time Commitment:

Season: The Dance Team's season runs from when school begins in late August through late February. The squads are broken into "Football" and "Basketball" squads to break the season into August - November and October - February, respectively. Tryouts for both squads are held in the Spring. If you are selected to the Football squad, you do not have to re-tryout for the Basketball squad, however, if you are only interested in participating on the Basketball squad, please notify the Coach and/or Advisor at tryouts.

Practice: During the school year, the team will practice three times each week for two hours (more at the beginning of the season, less during busy academic weeks). Additional time is spent conditioning outside of practices. These practices will take place during the protected period (4-6 p.m.) during the week.

Football Games: The football season runs from the first weekend of school through November. Each member of the squad is required to attend all home games and all in-town games.

Basketball Games: Basketball season runs from November through February. Games are usually on weekends, with an occasional weekday game.

Priorities:
We encourage dance team members involvement in other activities; however, we ask that your commitment to your squad come before any other extracurricular activities. We give plenty of advance notice of all practices and games. Team members are expected to plan accordingly - time management is essential. In order to be a part of the program, dancers need to attend all practices and games. Please keep this in mind when trying out for the team. Commitment and dedication is extremely important.

Financial Commitment:
Millsaps College provides partial uniforms for all dance team members. Dancers are expected to pay for personal items including shoes, pants, warm-ups, proper undergarments, and practice clothing. Dance camp costs are paid for by the members or through fund-raisers. Dancers are expected to fundraise to supplement the budget.

Scholarships:
Millsaps does NOT offer scholarships for any athletic program, including the dance team. Scholarships are based primarily on academic performance. After evaluating academic performance other factors such as essays, involvement, need and leadership skills are taken into consideration.
