M. Nienaber - Millsaps Sports Information
JACKSON, Miss. - The Majors kicked off the 2010 season in high fashion this afternoon with a 6-0 shutout of the visiting Louisiana College Wildcats.
The Majors (1-0) found the net early and often with five goals in the first half of play. In fact, the Majors did not go longer than eight minutes without a goal in the frame.
Dora Lambert scored first in the 14th-minute followed by
Hayley Nemeth with her first of two in the 18th.
The Wildcats (0-1) were unable to get anything going on the offensive side of the field thanks to tremendous defensive stands by the Majors' midfield and defenders. Louisiana had a hard time holding on the ball for more than a few touches before it was taken away again by the Majors.
Over the closing ten minutes of the first half the Majors rattled off three more goals to take a commanding 5-0 advantage into halftime.
Haley Hesdorffer connected in the 26th-minute,
Emily Townsend in the 30th, and Nemeth got her second in the 35th.
Credit to the Wildcats for not packing up during the break, they came out and held the Majors' hot offense scoreless for the first 36 minutes of the second half.
Hunter Futch broke though at the end to score the sixth and final goal in the 81st minute.
A quick glance at the stat sheet shows just how dominate the Majors were, outshooting the Wildcats 42-0. Major keeper
Sarah Nelin had a very lonely game in front of the Millsaps net, touching the ball only a handful of times. With all the activity around the Louisiana College goal, Wildcat keeper Emily Breaux collected 17 saves on the day. The majors also held an 11-0 advantage in corners-taken.
The Majors will take the momentum from this game on the road this weekend as they head to Texas for a pair of games with two more ASC teams. They will face off with East Texas Baptist on Friday night at 7:00 before heading over to LeTourneau for another early evening game at 5:00 on Sunday.
