Roussel Powers Majors Past 'Roos in Slugfest
Box Score

JACKSON –
Sophomore Jules Roussel drove in three runs while going 4-for-5 from the plate with two doubles and his team-leading fourth home run of the season to lead the Millsaps College baseball team to a 14-9 conference victory over Austin College Saturday afternoon at Twenty Field.

In a game where the teams combined for 27 hits, every starter for the Majors recorded at least one hit.

Scooter Merritt got things going for the ‘Roos with a lead-off home run as AC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Majors answered back in the bottom half of the first, taking advantage of two errors by AC to even the score 1-1.

The ‘Roos added a run in the second and four more in the third highlighted by a three-run homer by Brian Buehler off starter Shelby Robertson to take a 6-1 lead.

Millsaps responded by sending 12 men to the plate, scoring eight in the bottom of the third.

After Drew Leonard led the inning with a single, Jeremy Aliff walked and Josh Ordeneaux singled to load the bases for Will Hawkins, who was hit by a pitch bringing home Leonard.

Tyler Berry followed with an RBI single and Jake Mills was hit by a pitch scoring Ordeneaux before Roussel drove in two more with a double down the right field line.

An RBI single by Wes Perkins forced AC to make a call to the bullpen bringing in Schulmeister to replace starter Tyler Sneed, who lasted just two innings allowing nine runs –eight earned.

The Majors would add runs on a sacrifice fly by Trey Rountree and a single from Aliff before the third out was recorded with Millsaps in front 9-6.

AC would cut into the deficit scoring two in the top of the fourth when Merritt hit his second homer of the game, this time a two-run shot off reliever Blake Boleware.

Millsaps countered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning aided by three ‘Roos errors for a 13-8 advantage.

A solo home run by AC’s Jordan Robison to start the fifth inning forced head coach Jim Page to turn to Boomer Hudson who pitched the final 4 2/3 innings allowing no runs and just one hit.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Roussel added to his impressive performance with a line drive that sailed over the fence in right field for his fourth home run of the season to increase the Majors’ lead to 14-9.

Roussel finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs to lead the Majors while Ordeneaux went 3-for-5 and Perkins drove home three runs in support.

The ‘Roos were paced by Merritt’s two home runs while Buehler and Robison each recorded two hits.

Boleware (1-0) earned the victory for Millsaps in relief while Hudson recorded his first save of the season as the Majors remain a perfect 5-0 in conference games and improve to 10-3 overall on the year.

With the loss, Austin College falls to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the SCAC.

The teams will be back in action Sunday afternoon as Millsaps goes for the weekend sweep. The first-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
