GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Millsaps College men's basketball team scored a season-low 39 points in a road loss to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Southwestern University Friday night at the Robertson Center.
With the victory, the Pirates secure a spot in the SCAC Tournament later this month and move to 15-6 overall and 7-4 in the SCAC while the Majors fall to 9-11 overall and 5-7 in the SCAC.
Millsaps shot 13 percent from behind the arc going 3-for-24 and attempted only five free throws compared to 19 by Southwestern.
Freshman
Quinn Lemieux got the Majors on the scoreboard first with a layup but Southwestern responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from Travis Barber to take a 6-2 lead.
After Lemieux hit a 3-point basket to tie the score 12-12, the Pirates answered by going on an 8-0 scoring run to take a 20-12 lead.
Late in the first half, a 3-pointer from Nick Caputo gave Southwestern its largest lead at 25-14 until Millsaps closed the half on a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 26-18 at the break.
The Pirates opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take command of the game and built a 22-point lead with under seven minutes remaining in regulation.
The Majors were able to close the gap but it was too little, too late as they fall to 1-8 away from The Hangar Dome this season.
Lemieux and fellow freshman
Nick Cortese scored a team-high seven points to lead Millsaps while Jonathan Brown led all scorers with 14 points for the Pirates.
Up next for Millsaps is an important game with Trinity University on Sunday afternoon as the Majors remain in the hunt for a playoff berth. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
