JACKSON – Freshman
Kristin Salmon scored a career-high 19 points, going 5-for-8 from behind the arc, for Millsaps College but saw Southwestern University come back from a five-point halftime deficit for the SCAC victory, 66-59 Friday night at The Hangar Dome.
The Majors (0-13, 0-4 SCAC) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with a layup from freshman
Shante' Morton and a 3-pointer from senior
Megan Bauerle.
Using a 9-1 scoring run, the Pirates (6-7, 2-2) took a 19-16 lead until back-to-back 3-point baskets by
Jasmine Harbor and Bauerle regained a 22-19 lead for Millsaps.
Salmon proceeded to hit two 3-pointers in the closing minutes of the first half as the Majors took a 31-26 advantage into the break.
Starting the second half, Bauerle found Morton in the paint for an easy layup as Millsaps opened its largest lead of the game, 33-26.
However, the Pirates would answer right back with ten straight points to take a 36-33 lead four minutes into the final stanza.
The teams battled for momentum throughout the middle stage of the second half as the lead changed back-and-forth until freshman
Deonna Walton made a basket for a 55-53 Millsaps advantage with five minutes remaining in the contest.
Southwestern's Jessica Herbst answered with a 3-pointer as the Pirates took a 56-55 lead and never looked back as they claimed a 66-59 victory to keep the Majors winless on the season.
Katie Kern led the Pirates with a game-high 17 points, while Shae Seagraves and Katelyn Bartell each chipped in 13 points.
Walton recorded her first career double-double for Millsaps finishing with 11 points and a game-high ten rebounds and Morton finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
The Majors will continue a 6-game homestand Saturday with a conference game against Trinity University at 6:00 p.m.
