JACKSON – Despite scoring a season-high 80 points Friday night at The Hangar Dome, the Millsaps women’s basketball team dropped its 19th straight game of the season as visiting Sewanee led from start to finish for the 92-80 conference victory.
The Majors, still winless on the season at 0-19 and 0-10 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, rallied from a 22-point halftime deficit but fell short in the end as the Tigers pulled away in the closing minutes.
Kelly Morrison got Sewanee (6-12 overall, 2-8 SCAC) on the board off the opening tip and the Tigers quickly built a 12-2 lead behind back-to-back 3-pointers from Logan Miller -- two of her seven in the game.
Millsaps got plenty of chances to cut into the lead grabbing 11 offensive rebounds in the first half -- 19 in the game -- but could not come up with the second-chance points as the Tigers increased the lead to 21-7.
Both teams ran the floor with determination and continued to capitalize on fast break chances as the Majors outscored the Tigers 26-22 in fast break points on the night .
Sewanee closed the opening half on a 21-9 run to earn its largest lead of the game at 54-32.
Millsaps opened the second half with intensity and scored the first six points behind baskets from freshman
Lovie Love and
Shante’ Morton to cut the lead to 54-38.
The Hangar Dome crowd came alive after this and later helped the Majors go on a 7-0 run to get the lead down to 10-points at 65-55.
A 3-pointer from Juliene Joyner silenced the crowd but not for long as Millsaps went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to four points at 72-68.
The Majors would not give up as they continued to battle closing the gap to three points with just over six minutes to play in the contest.
With its first win in its sights, Millsaps could only watch as Sewanee turned the momentum in its favor and scored 13 of the final 18 points to pull away for the 92-80 victory.
Morton tied a career-high with 26 points, 15 of which came in the second half to go with 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season, to lead the Majors offensively.
Jasmine Harbor chipped in 14 points while
Deonna Walton grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds.
Pamela Jackson and
Sarah Spann finished with seven assists apiece for Millsaps.
Miller led Sewanee with 26 points on 8-for-11 shooting, including 7-for-9 from behind the arc. Five other Tiger players recorded double-figures in points as the team finished 14-for-34 from 3-point range.
Dani Kabbes pulled down eight rebounds and Alex Ginsburg dished seven assists to lead Sewanee statistically.
The Majors return to the hardwood Sunday afternoon when they face conference foe Oglethorpe University at 1:00 p.m.
