BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Facing the SCAC East Division’s top team in Birmingham-Southern College, the Millsaps College men’s basketball team dropped its third consecutive game as the host Panthers rolled to the conference victory Sunday afternoon at Bill Battle Coliseum, 64-41.
The Majors (7-10 overall, 3-6 SCAC) struck first with a jumper from senior
Cameron Varnado, but the Panthers rallied to tie the score 8-8 before taking a 13-10 lead with a layup by Roger Williams.
Millsaps responded by scoring the next four points, capped by a 3-pointer from Varnado to regain a 14-13 advantage.
Hart Ahumada countered with a 3-point basket for the Panthers to spark a 10-0 run that reclaimed the lead at 23-14 midway through the opening half.
BSC added to its lead in the closing minutes of the half with a 7-2 run to take a 34-20 lead into the break.
After the Panthers got ahead by 18 points early in the second half, the Majors rallied to get the lead back to single digits with a 9-0 run capped by a free throw from
LV Sumler with 11 minutes to play.
This would be the closest Millsaps would get the rest of the way as BSC stormed ahead in the next eight minutes with a 16-2 run to take a commanding 59-36 advantage.
BSC cruised the final three minutes to claim the conference victory 64-41, dropping the Majors to just 1-7 on the road this season.
Senior
Blake Martinez led the Majors with eight points and
Quinn Lemieux recorded a team-leading seven rebounds.
Kevin Kegarise led all scorers with 13 points for the Panthers and Jason Jonus added 12 points. Mark Messenger finished with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Millsaps will return home for a pair of conference games as it plays host to Sewanee University Friday night at 8 p.m. and Oglethorpe University Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
