MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Committing a season low 11 turnovers was not enough for the injury plagued Millsaps women’s basketball team as it dropped its 17th straight game of the season Friday night at Rhodes College, 65-54.
With only six players healthy and dressed, the Majors (0-17, 0-8 SCAC) outscored the Lynx (10-7, 3-5 SCAC) in the second half but could not overcome a 13-point halftime deficit.
Freshman
Kristin Salmon gave Millsaps a 2-1 lead in the opening minute with a jumper as the teams traded baskets in the early stages of the half.
A basket by Shelby Kramer capped a 9-3 run for Rhodes as it built a 19-11 advantage until freshman
Lovie Love hit a 3-pointer to stop the run.
The Lynx closed the opening half outscoring the Majors 10-2 as they took a 33-20 lead into halftime.
Rhodes started the second half on another 10-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 43-35.
Millsaps could not recover from this deficit as the Lynx cruised to the SCAC victory, 65-54.
Without the Majors’ top post players in the lineup, Rhodes took advantage down low and outscored Millsaps 32-16 in the paint.
Love paced the Majors with 13 points while Salmon,
Pamela Jackson and
Sarah Spann each added 11 points.
Elizabeth Sigafoose turned in a career and game-high 11 rebounds to lead all players on the glass.
Rhodes’ Becky Atnip led all scorers with 15 points and Sharwil Bell put in another 14 as the Lynx had four players reach double-figures.
The Majors will conclude their weekend trip with a game Sunday afternoon at Birmingham-Southern College scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
