Majors Let Late Lead Slip in Loss to Lynx, 58-53

MEMPHIS, Tenn. –
For the second straight game, the Millsaps men’s basketball team carried a lead late into the second half only to see it collapse as Rhodes rallied for the conference victory at Mallory Gymnasium, 58-53.

The Lynx (7-9, 2-6 SCAC) controlled play in the final six minutes of the game outscoring the Majors (7-9, 3-5 SCAC) 12-5 to come away with the important win.

Senior Blake Martinez started the scoring with a 3-point basket assisted by Brian Merkel and Rhodes’ Kory Kilpatrick quickly tied the game with a 3-pointer of his own.

Merkel and Quinn Lemieux scored the next five points for the Majors as they took an early 8-3 lead.

Millsaps built its largest lead of the game, 17-7 after Aaron Caldwell hit a jumper midway through the opening half.

Rhodes went on a 10-2 scoring run to close the gap but the Majors carried a 30-24 advantage into the half.

Opening the second half, the Lynx outscored Millsaps 10-4 to even the score 34-34.

Martinez got the Majors back on top with his second 3-pointer of the game and Ben Cooper scored five of the game’s next seven points as Millsaps took a 44-38 lead with ten minutes to play.

The Lynx rallied to tie the score 46-46 before taking their first lead of the game with a pair of free throws by Nathan Ollie.

Rhodes closed the game by converting 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal the SCAC victory, 58-53.

Lemieux led the Majors with a game-high 13 points and seven rebounds while Cameron Varnado added 12 points.

Ollie, Reid Hamilton and Larry Cunningham scored 12 points apiece to lead the Lynx.

Millsaps will continue its weekend trip Sunday afternoon when they face Birmingham-Southern College in a crucial conference match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
