BOX SCORE
JACKSON – Playing their first game in 2010, the Millsaps College women’s basketball team fell to crosstown rival Mississippi College, 70-47, Saturday afternoon at The Hangar Dome for their 12th consecutive loss to open the season.
Junior
Ronda Webb and freshman
Jasmine Harbor led the Majors in scoring with 11 apiece but could not keep pace with the Lady Choctaws presence in the paint.
MC’s Jennifer Wair led all scorers with 20 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists while Keisha Shumpert and Jalessa Taylor added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
The Lady Choctaws (10-1) established their presence down low from the opening tip as they built an early 8-3 lead with six of the points coming in the paint.
Millsaps (0-12) cut the lead to 11-10 with baskets by Webb and Harbor and took a 14-11 lead after a pair of free throws by freshman
Sarah Spann.
Midway through the opening half the Majors held an 18-17 advantage until a 3-point play by MC sparked a 15-2 scoring run to take control of the game.
Senior
Cori Tucker drained a 3-pointer to end the Millsaps drought late in the half but the Lady Choctaws took a 36-24 advantage into halftime.
The second half opened with the teams trading baskets as MC maintained a comfortable 45-36 lead.
This would be all the closer the Majors would get as the Lady Choctaws went on a 13-0 run to build a 22 point lead at the halfway point of the second frame.
MC cruised the remaining minutes as its lead grew to 27 with one minute left in the game and came away with a 70-47 non-conference victory.
The Majors return to action next weekend as they face conference foes Southwestern on Friday and Trinity on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m.
