JACKSON - In a game that was never as close as the scoreboard read, host Millsaps College clicked on all cylinders and piled up a season-high 514 total yards to topple the 18th-ranked Trinity University Tigers, 24-6, at Harper Davis Field Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Millsaps won its 10th consecutive conference game and moved to 3-1 overall (2-0 in SCAC play), while Trinity dropped to 3-1 and 1-1 in league action, snapping a four-game win streak.
Sophomore
Shane Bowser went over the 100-yard mark for the second time in three games for Millsaps, carrying the ball 11 times for 119 yards (10.8 avg), while his teammate
Kevin Peters picked off a career-high three passes and added seven solo tackles.
Millsaps controlled the game from its opening defensive stand, forcing a quick three-and-out on Trinity's first possession and never looking back. The Majors would then take a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown toss from
Chris Graves to
Jason O'Rear, capping a 13-play, 65-yard drive that covered 6:01.
After a pair of stalled out drives, the Majors looked to tack on another score on their opening drive of the second quarter, as Graves went scampering in from 16-yards out. Millsaps, however, was whistled for holding and had the touchdown wiped off the board -- one of three on the day.
Taylor Russolino attempt at a 43-yard field goal was no good, having the distance, but sailing wide right.
Just before the half, on the Majors' final drive, Graves found a streaking Bowser from 20-yards out for the score but again was wiped off on a holding penalty.
Senior
Kenny Metzger's career-long, 52-yard touchdown score four minutes into the third quarter stretched the Millsaps lead to 14-0 and gave the Majors some breathing room, as they headed into the final period with a two touchdown lead.
After Peters' interception setup the Majors at their own 42-yard line,
Chris Skinner plowed his way into the end zone for a commanding 21-0 lead just over a minute into the fourth.
Trinity finally found the end zone off the ensuing kickoff, using Caleb Urban's 87-yard kick return for a score, but having the point after attempt blocked by freshman
Tevin Goggins.
From there, Millsaps tacked on a 36-yard field goal with 4:16 remaining and would make one final defensive stop to secure the 24-6 victory.
Millsaps held Trinity to just 186 total yards, including 59 on the ground on 23 carries, while gaining 514 of its own against the conference's top-ranked defense.
The Majors will hit the road for their next two games, traveling to DePauw 2-1 (1-1 SCAC) Oct. 3 and Huntingdon College (3-1) on Oct. 10. Both contests will be webcast.
