JACKSON – Millsaps College athletic director Tim Wise announced today the hiring of former Millsaps standout Doug Garner as the Majors' newest men's and women's head golf coach exclusively in charge of working with the golf program.
Garner officially accepted his first collegiate job on Sept. 10, but will fulfill his obligations with the PGA's Viking Classic through Nov. 1.
“To be able to come back to my alma mater is exciting," Garner said. "I want to build this into a championship sport equal to some of our other sports. Being a former student-athlete at Millsaps, I know the caliber of academics at Millsaps and that it takes a unique student-athlete to achieve in both athletics and academics.”
Garner was a standout pitcher for the Majors from 2000-05, ending his Millsaps career first all-time in wins (32), strikeouts (260) and innings pitched (345.1) and third all-time in career ERA (3.23). Garner also spent two seasons on the football team in 2000 and 2001, helping the Majors to an 11-9 mark.
After receiving his bachelors of business administration in 2004 and MBA in 2005, Garner took a job working as the sales and charity coordinator of the PGA Tour's Viking Classic in Madison, Miss. Since August of 2004, Garner has been working with the event each year, which brings some of the tours top professionals.
Garner and his wife Aimee, also a Millsaps alum, will celebrate their three year wedding anniversary on Oct. 14, 2009, as the two had their first child, Lilly (seven months) in February. Garner also has two sisters, Nicole and Allison.
