EDINBURG, Texas -- Former three-time D3baseball.com and ABCA All-American Hunter Owen of Millsaps College has signed a one-year independent contract, with an option for a second year, to play with the
Edinburg Roadrunners of the United Baseball League.
"I'm really excited to get the chance to play," Owen said. "It's been a dream of mine to play in the major leagues one day and I'm ready to get started."
The ULB is an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas that include Amarillo, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Rio Grande Valley and San Angelo.
Owen joins former Millsaps right-handed pitcher, John Fox, as an independent contract signee who also played for Edinburg one season in 2006. Fox went 2-3 with a 6.54 ERA in seven starts, hurling two complete games and striking out 39.
Owen will be with the team on Friday, July 10, when it returns from a four-game road trip and is slated to bat in the cleanup spot as the designated hitter against the Coastal Bend Thunder. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
"Ever since the season ended, I've been working hard and staying in shape," Owen said. "I just need to work on being consistent everyday and putting good swings on the ball. As I face better competition everyday, I'll try my best to keep improving."
The Roadrunners, formerly the Edinburg Coyotes, are currently 13-15 on the year under skipper Vince Moore and sit in fourth place in the six-team league.
