SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps women’s soccer team hit the road for two important conference matches against Oglethorpe and Sewanee this weekend and returned home with a win and a loss to move to 6-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in SCAC play.
The Majors got the weekend started off on the right foot with a convincing 4-1 win over host Oglethorpe behind two goals each from seniors
Megan Sullivan and
Leslie Robichaux Friday afternoon in Atlanta.
Sullivan got the scoring started in the 29th minute with her fourth goal of the season and Robichaux put the Majors ahead 2-0 just five minutes later.
Goalkeeper
Sarah Nelin gave up a goal to the Lady Petrels late in the first half as the ball deflected off a Millsaps defender to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.
Sullivan again found the back of the net in the 57th minute increasing the lead to 3-1 in favor of the Majors and Robichaux netted her second goal of the match – ninth goal of the season – as time was winding down to seal the 4-1 victory for Millsaps for its first conference win of the season.
Facing Sewanee, the first place team in the SCAC, on Sunday afternoon, Millsaps was kept off the scoreboard for the fifth time in the last seven contests falling 2-0.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when a shot from Allison Davis beat Nelin. Sewanee continued to pressure the Millsaps defense, but Nelin kept the ball out of the net the remainder of the half.
Sewanee gained a comfortable two-goal lead early in the second half when Virginia Zakas got the ball past Nelin for the 2-0 advantage. The Tigers controlled play the rest of the match allowing the Majors only one shot in the second half for a match total of five, while firing 16 of their own.
Nelin finished the weekend with eight total saves and three goals allowed as she moves to 6-3-2 on the season between the pipes for the Majors.
Millsaps returns to action Friday night against Southwestern University at 6:00 p.m. to begin a season-long four-game home stand.
