JACKSON - Playing at Harper Davis Field, the Millsaps College women's soccer team got a second half goal from Hayley Nemeth, but were unable to protect the lead as they settled for a 1-1 tie in two overtimes with visiting Southwestern University Friday night to move to 6-3-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the SCAC.
Senior
Leslie Robichaux gave the Majors their first scoring chance when her shot in the 10th minute deflected off the goal post. Fellow senior
Megan Sullivan had another great opportunity 12 minutes later when she received a pass from Robichaux and fired a shot that sailed just wide of the goal.
The best chance for Millsaps came off a
Jessica Harris corner kick when
Meredith Harris headed the ball to the right corner of the goal only to see a Pirate defender covering the goal line clear the ball before it crosssed the line keeping the match scoreless at the half.
Early in the second half, Southwestern pressured the Millsaps defense and Amy Douglas got a shot off from point blank range that Millsaps goalkeeper
Sarah Nelin made a spectacular save on to keep the PIrates off the board.
On the ensuing corner kick, a shot from Southwestern's Laura Ornelas had to be cleared off the goal line by Harris to keep the score tied 0-0.
In the 68th minute, junior
Hayley Nemeth got a pass from Jessica Harris and fired a shot from just outside the box that bounced off the hands of Southwestern's goalkeeper Sarah Nonaka and went between her legs and trickled over the goal line for a 1-0 Millsaps lead.
The lead would not last long as the Pirates scored the equalizer just ten minutes later when a shot by Maria Pollifrone beat Nelin.
One last chance for Millsaps in regulation came with 3:24 remaining as a shot from Robichaux bounced off the crossbar and harmlessly away from the net to keep the match tied heading into overtime.
Neaither team was able to generate any pressure in the two overtime periods as they both looked exhausted. Both goalkeepers made the necessary saves as the match ended in a draw.
Nelin finished with five saves and moved to 6-3-3 on the season.
The Majors will be back in action this Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. as they play host to the undefeated Trinity University Tigers currently ranked No. 6 in the latest NSCAA poll.
